The problem with article directories is that they got the subject of content harvesting.
People still your content and delete your backlinks.
It is much wiser in terms of SEO to join free communities where content republishers and content authors are under some sort of agreement.
You have a list of niche blogs where you can republish the content, and the blog owners are not allowed to touch your backlinks or make them no follow. Thus, one article can bring, for example, up to 60 one way backlinks from inside real, relevant blog posts.

Yes, some people rip you off, but unless they re-write it, you should get indexed first. I look at it as a one way link back and will not submit the same article to more than one directory and I just use the top 4 directories
